Former MCA vice-president Chua Jui Meng join PKR

Former MCA vice-president Chua Jui Meng is believed to be defecting to the opposition PKR at a function to be held this weekend.

Chua has called for an emergency meeting of his Bakri MCA division in Johor tonight where he is expected to quit as its division chief. It is learnt that his deputy, Sia Ka Tuan, will be stepping in as the division's acting chief.

Chua, 64, a former health minister and a trained lawyer, has been Bakri MCA division chief for 23 years.

He contested for the MCA president's post twice and lost to two Ongs - Ong Ka Ting in 2005 and Ong Tee Keat in 2008.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim is hoping to use Chua's defection to regain momentum for the opposition which has been floundering due to internal bickering and a resurgent Barisan Nasional under new Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Attempts by Malaysiakini to contact Chua for his comments have been unsuccessful.
