KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will revise electricity tariff for consumers effective March 1 in line with the government's decision to reduce gas price for the power sector as announced today.

The new rates will reflect the reduction in the gas price (from RM14.31 per Million British Thermal Units (MMBTU) to RM10.70 per MMBTU while taking into account the increase in coal price (from US$75 per tonne to US$85 a tonne), the power utility giant said in a statement to Bursa Malaysia.

Major features of the new tariff rates are as follows:-

* Industrial consumers: average reduction 5.0 percent (ranging from 4.8 percent to 5.2 percent);

* Commercial consumers: average reduction of 2.7 percent (ranging from 2.6 percent to 2.7 percent);

* Domestic/household consumers: average reduction 2.54 percent for monthly consumption of more than 200KWh (Kilowatt hour) (tariff reduction ranges from 3.0 percent to 4.7 percent).

For monthly consumption up to 200kWh, there is no tariff reduction as the rate was maintained at a highly subsidised rate of 21.8 sen/kWh in the past tariff reviews since 1997.

Tariff for Lifeline Band (for household consumers utilising up to 200kWh or RM43.60 of electricity per month) is maintained at 21.8 sen per kWh.

Government rebate for household consumers utilising electricity up to RM20 per month is maintained until December, it said.
