KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the Cabinet had not made any decision on tariff hike for Tenaga Nasional Bhd but it would look into this as the price of natural gas had increased.

The Prime Minister said on July 22 that: “No decision was taken today and everything remains status quo”.

However, Najib told a press conference at his Putrajaya office that the government would have to look into this because of the increase in the gas price and that Petroliam Nasional Bhd had to fork out about RM6.4 billion a year.

“That is money that can be transferred to government to be spent on projects and on the people. But that has gone to fuel subsidies,” he said. He refused to say if tariff hikes will take place next month.

On Maxis Communications Bhd, he said that following his trip to Saudi Arabia, “I’ve made a suggestion that Maxis should be relisted on the stock exchange (Bursa Malaysia) because this is a joint-venture between Malaysia and Saudi interest”..

“It would certainly add more liquidity into the market and make investors more enthusiastic about our capital market because they have a large portfolio investing in a company that is well-managed. So, hopefully it will happen fairly soon,” he said.

Asked whether the Saudi investors were interested in Maxis, he replied: “They are already in partnership with Maxis, which is already delisted. But I would like to see Maxis relisted on the stock exchange.”

“The request has been conveyed to the Maxis owners and they are considering it very seriously.”

Maxis was delisted on July 13, 2007 after it was taken private by Binariang GSM Sdn Bhd.
