KUALA LUMPUR: AEON Co (M) Bhd's net profit rose 3.5% to RM32.33 million in its third quarter (3Q) ended Sept 30, 2009 from RM31.23 million a year earlier on the back of a 5% rise in revenue to RM968.62 million from RM922.3 million.

Basic earnings per share (EPS) rose to 9.21 sen from 8.90 sen. No interim dividend was declared. AEON said revenue rose mainly due to new stores opening at end-2008, while existing stores had maintained their performance.

AEON said at pre-tax level, its profit rose 44% to RM46.6 million from RM32.3 million in the preceding second quarter mainly due to higher revenue.

"With the Malaysian economy showing signs of recovery, the company expects consumer spending to improve in the last quarter," it said.

For the nine months to Sept 30, its net profit rose 2.7% to RM77.79 million from RM75.77 million, while revenue rose 10% to RM2.75 billion from RM2.50 billion. EPS rose to 22.16 sen from 21.59 sen.
